In 2019 the National CLT Network launched the Cohesive Communities Fund offering grants of up to £15,000 to develop the skills and capacity of CLT Members and to support a range of activities that would increase community engagement and get more people involved with the CLT.  South Bank was one of only 16 successful applications to the fund from across the country and the only one on the North East to be awarded funding.

Community Housing Fund

In 2019 we were successful in securing a revenue grant of £56,494 from Homes England.  This grant allowed us to develop our plans to buy some empty houses, modernise them and provide good quality affordable homes for rent.  Once we’d identified some suitable properties, we used the grant to employ surveyors to check their condition and list what repair work was needed.  We then appointed solicitors to do the legal work needed by them, paid Council Tax and a Landlord Licencing fee to the council, and paid for consultation events with the community, training for the CLT Directors and for the website to be developed.

The council has been a key supporter of the CLT since the idea of community led housing was first talked about.  Community led Housing was already highlighted as a priority in the councils published housing strategy and with their support, our project was the first in the borough to receive a grant that would allow us to buy our first 5 long term empty properties.  Without the councils support the project would never have happened..

Housing Group

As the largest landlord in the Tees Valley, on-going support from Thirteen has been invaluable to the Trust.  Thirteen’s staff have helped shape and support the group as it has developed, and staff members have been regular attendees at our steering group meetings and all of the community engagement events that have helped increase local interest in the CLT.  Thirteen has helped the group with project management, community engagement and financial management support
Thirteen have also secured funding from Homes England to pay for the repairs to the 5 empty houses we are buying.
